September Happenings

This past month has been so much fun! Thanks to everyone who came out to the Community Band concert on August 27th. It was fantastic to see so many people, and the band sounded great!

Community Band will be back on Saturday September 10, in partnership with Neighborhood Music School. Come have a listen, or sit in with the band from 10am to noon.

Community Arts also returns on Saturday, and September is for Puppets!!

On September 10 and September 17 from 10am to noon, we’ll be making hand puppets. For the younger artists, we’ll make simple but fun paper puppets inspired by the children’s book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See, by Bill Martin and Eric Carle. For older artists that want to create a more involved hand puppet, we’ll use paper maché heads on a fabric body, inspired by animals and birds. Note that paper maché takes time to dry, so you’ll need both Saturdays to create these.

On September 24, we’ll make two-dimensional shadow puppets with articulated limbs. For younger artists, we’ll have templates of animals and birds that can be traced, cut out, decorated, and attached to a large popsicle stick. For older artists, we’ll use heavy card stock to create more complex forms from  drawings, use brads to articulate movement, and rods to hold the puppet up and move it.

Get Rich Quick! is an evening of experimental short films & videos presented by the Arroyo Seco Cine Club. They promise a sticky mess of money, consumer culture, and existentialism. The whirlpool of mainstream media and advertising is strong—come to this screening and get spit out the other side. Wednesday, September 21 at 8pm,  FREE.
Indoor event: masks, proof of vaccine required.

Activating the Archive is an 8 week, 8 session film class for youth 14-19 to explore and question the nature of visual archives, presented in partnership with the Echo Park Film Center. It’s Completely Free but students must attend all 8 Saturday sessions starting September 24, and registration is required.

Keeping it safe: Outdoor programming will be canceled due to excessive heat or rain, masks and proof of vaccine required for all indoor events, and please stay home if you have any covid-19 symptoms. Let’s keep each other healthy!

Hope to see you all soon!
