Art in the Park is excited to welcome teaching musician Matthew Hernandez.
Matthew will be at Art in the Park leading Latin Percussion Lab and Latin Jazz Sessions starting Monday, September 18th for six weeks. These workshops happen in partnership with Neighborhood Music School. https://www.neighborhoodmusic.org.
Latin Percussion Lab
This program is designed to introduce basic rhythms and counting exercises for young students through the use of hand percussion and Afro-Latin drumming techniques. Kids will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave, tumbao, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. This will be a very fun and engaging drumming course targeting students of the ages from k – 5th grade.
Latin Jazz Sessions RSVP
This weekly band is an introduction to the many popular Latin styles of music from slow and intimate cha cha and boleros to fast paced and high energy salsa, cumbia, and merengue. Join us for an eventful start to the first installment of the Latin Jazz Sessions at Art in the Park, and surprise yourself with how much you could learn in just a few weeks! Sheet music and basic drumming pattern worksheets will be readily available every week. Everyone is free to join this program, though some musical experience will greatly help in familiarizing patterns and learning songs. Art in the Park has drums and some instruments available for use, too, so don’t be shy – stop by and try it out for yourself.
Matthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets, like music, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world, whether it’s through live performance, group teaching, volunteer work, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends.
He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band, Timba Tumbao. With his band, he’s performed all across SoCal, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing, smiles, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”

Art in the Park tiene el gran gusto de darle la bienvenida al músico y maestro Matthew Hernandez. Matthew estará en Art in the Park realizando un laboratorio de percusión latina y sesiones de jazz latino a partir del lunes 18 de septiembre durante seis semanas. Laboratorio de Percusión Latina
Este programa está diseñado para presentar ritmos básicos y ejercicios de conteo para estudiantes jóvenes mediante el uso de percusión manual y técnicas de percusión afrolatina. Los niños tendrán la oportunidad de aprender todo sobre los elementos esenciales de la música latina como clave, tumbao y tonos básicos de conga. Habrá una introducción a diferentes tipos de instrumentos cada semana, así como una canción de la semana de varios íconos de la salsa y el cha cha. Este será un curso de batería muy divertido y atractivo dirigido a estudiantes de edades entre los grados K y quinto.
Sesiones de jazz latino
Esta banda semanal es una introducción a los muchos estilos populares de música latina, desde cha cha y boleros lentos e íntimos hasta salsa, cumbia y merengue de ritmo rápido y lleno de energía. Únase a nosotros para un comienzo lleno de acontecimientos en la primera entrega de las Sesiones de Jazz Latino en Art in the Park, ¡y sorpréndase con lo mucho que podría aprender en tan solo unas semanas! Las partituras y las hojas de trabajo de patrones básicos de percusión estarán disponibles todas las semanas. Todos están invitados a unirse a este programa, aunque algo de experiencia musical será de gran ayuda para familiarizarse con los patrones y aprender canciones. Art in the Park también tiene tambores y algunos instrumentos disponibles para su uso, así que no dude en pasar y probarlo usted mismo.
Matthew Hernandez es un orgulloso defensor de las artes comunitarias y ha dedicado su trabajo al enriquecimiento de la celebración cultural y la alfabetización a través de la música. Al comprender cómo la música da forma y refleja la conciencia y las ambiciones culturales, reconoce la influencia que tiene sobre grandes grupos de individuos que comparten un terreno común en creencias y expresión. Ser una fuente para unir a la comunidad le brinda toda la alegría del mundo, ya sea a través de presentaciones en vivo, enseñanza en grupo, trabajo voluntario o incluso simplemente una conversación informal con vecinos y amigos.
Actualmente estudia en el Programa de Música Aplicada del Herb Alpert Music Center en Los Angeles City College y se ha ganado la reputación de ser el coordinador musical y saxofonista de la banda de salsa y jazz latino Timba Tumbao. Con su banda, ha actuado en todo el sur de California, ofreciendo un espectáculo de baile latino en vivo divertido y lleno de energía. Le encanta lo que hace porque tiene la oportunidad de conectarse con tantas comunidades increíbles y compartir una experiencia inclusiva llena de bailes, sonrisas y recuerdos divertidos. “La música es un lenguaje sin palabras, habla sólo con emociones profundas y expresión verdadera”.
