Los Angeles Feelings presents two bodies of work by artist Rochele Gomez. Vision Boards are four sculptures consisting of TV trays that hold a sheet of glass with photos taped to it that reference Lina Bo Bardi’s crystal easels at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. And Los Angeles Feelings is a series of lightboxes that display backlit photographs of different homes in Los Angeles where her family has lived with a giant Garfield greeting card made by hand. Both bodies of work are grounded in Los Angeles sites that carry psycho-geographical weight, in order to critically explore class, identity, and subjectivity. In seeing objects in relationship to these markers, Gomez interweaves her personal history and lived experience, and searches for intersections between the aesthetics of her family and art.
Rochele Gomez was born, lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a BFA from CSU Long Beach and a MFA from UC Irvine. She has exhibited at Artist Curated Projects, Los Angeles; Art Center College of Design DTLA, Los Angeles; The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; and LAXART, Los Angeles, among others. From 2017-2020, she co-ran an artist-run space called QUEENS Los Angeles, where emerging and underrecognized artists were given solo exhibitions.
