If Food Could Talk

October 26, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Christal Perez

Opening 10.26.2019, 2-5pm

In the exhibition “If Food Could Talk,” Christal Perez interrogates the phenomenology of food, and delves into the subjectivities that cast a light upon the fetish of food and flesh. Situated within the realm of object-oriented ontology, the work privileges the subjectivity of food and memory of matter that makes up for instance Oscar Mayer bologna, menudo and other foods, to be able to begin to digest the entrails of auto-ethnography. In an archival impulse however, and a gesture edging on the precarity of the future, as well as highlighting the omission of other histories which are not told, she uses the media of the contemporary – the Foodsaver, in a mode of preservation, knowing all to well that bacteria and chemical processes will occur within the archival media and create a new history.

Christal Perez is a multimedia artist whose work is invested in deconstructing meta-narratives of history, philosophy and language. Her work commonly takes on the surrogacy of absurdity and banality, yet she uses it as a venture to disfigure the logic of postmodernity. She has shown at the Palos Verdes Art Center, Human Resources Los Angeles, USC Roski School of Art and Design, New Wight Gallery, The Reef and CalArts and has an upcoming show at the Box, Los Angeles on October and November 2019. She received her B.A. in Art from UCLA in 2019 and currently lives in Los Angeles.
