Learn how to create and arrange their own original beats and songs using Soundtrap, a free music production program. We will explore musical concepts like samples, recording, drum programming, and song structure to create songs both individually and in groups. If you’ve ever wanted to create a song on your own but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you! No prior musical experience required.

We will be using Soundtrap, a free music production program. Students will need to bring an ipad or laptop. If you don’t have a device, please let us know so we can work to accommodate.
Alec Kwo is a professional music producer and keyboardist based in Koreatown, Los Angeles, California. He grew up playing percussion in his grade school orchestras and studied both classical and jazz piano at Santa Clara University. These experiences led to his love of playful rhythms, complex harmony and lush arrangements, shaping his career as a musician and producer. He deeply values the power of using music as a tool for improving mental health and creative expression.
As a Teaching Artist for The Music Center and Young Musicians Foundation, Alec harnesses the power of music recording technology, bringing a mobile recording studio to all of his classrooms. Students create and record original songs with each class having 3-4 recordings that they can keep forever at the end of the sessions. He teaches concepts like rhythm, melody, dynamics, harmony, and song structure, which is built into each song the class collectively creates. Alec believes students learn best when they can see themselves in the works they are creating in an environment where they feel safe, present, and free to be themselves.
Alec is one half of the genre-bending duo, KWONIX, who released their debut EP, ‘DEVIATE’, in June 2026. He is a regular volunteer at the Tuesday Night Cafe, an Asian-American art series based in Little Tokyo. He is also the touring keyboardist for Cosmica Artist, Katzu Oso.
