DESCRIPTION:Latin Jazz Sessions with Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura \nThursdays (check site for updates) \n4:30pm – 6:00pm\, all ages  \nSign up here! \nThis weekly community band is an introduction to the many popular Latin styles of music from slow and intimate cha cha and boleros to fast paced and high energy salsa\, cumbia\, and merengue. Join us for an eventful start to the first installment of the Latin Jazz Sessions at Art in the Park\, and surprise yourself with how much you could learn in just a few weeks! Sheet music and basic drumming pattern worksheets will be readily available every week. Everyone is free to join this program\, though some musical experience will greatly help in familiarizing patterns and learning songs. Art in the Park has drums and some instruments available for use\, too\, so don’t be shy – stop by and try it out for yourself.  \nMatthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions\, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets\, like music\, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world\, whether it’s through live performance\, group teaching\, volunteer work\, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends. He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band\, Timba Tumbao. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. And of course\, we’ll be drawing together.  \nParticipants will each receive a copy of the Drawing Together Mindfulness Drawing Workbook to keep which includes 10 drawing exercises\, a resource list\, and a mental health screener. All exercises are designed to be used with no prior art experience. \nTeaching Artist Bio: Teresa Flores is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Los Angeles. Flores has led public programs at Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Spike Art Quarterly in Berlin. In over ten years of teaching\, she has taught Visual Culture at California State University\, Fresno and studio art for Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and California Arts Academy. She holds an MFA in Public Practice from Otis College of Art and Design and most recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from the County of Los Angeles for her public engagement work with the fire-impacted communities of Pacific Palisades and Malibu. \nAbout Drawing Together\nDrawing Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019 with the mission of creatively envisioning a healthier future through art. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. DESCRIPTION:Community Arts  \nCommunity Arts is held outside in Hermon Park most Saturdays. Join us in exploring the arts\, from puppets to painting. \nJoin Community Arts as we paint the animals\, birds\, plants\, and people we see in the park. Together\, we’re beginning to plan a community mural that celebrates the migration of all living things. Families belong together. \n\nMost Saturdays from 11 am–1pm  \nFree\, all ages  \nCommunity Arts – Printing Patterns and Impressions with community teaching artist Jess Ofelia Sandoval. We will experiment with the classic art activity of potato printing. We’ll cut and stencil different shapes and designs into potatoes\, dip them in paint\, and print our patterns onto cardstock to create our own unique artwork. We’ll also explore a traditional paint-making method inspired by the Aztecs. We’ll carefully crush cochineal bugs to discover a beautiful red pigment.  \nCommunity Arts is held outside in Hermon Park most Saturdays. We’ll cut and stencil different shapes and designs into potatoes\, dip them in paint\, and print our patterns onto cardstock to create our own unique artwork. We’ll also explore a traditional paint-making method inspired by the Aztecs. We’ll carefully crush cochineal bugs to discover a beautiful red pigment.  \nCommunity Arts is held outside in Hermon Park most Saturdays. Join us in exploring the arts\, from puppets to painting. \n\nMost Saturdays from 11 am–1pm  \nFree\, all ages  \nHappy Lunar New Year!  \nThe Lunar New Year is a celebration based on the moon calendar and is widely observed in countries like China\, Vietnam\, and Korea. It marks the beginning of a new zodiac year in the 12-animal cycle. \nThe Year of the Fire Horse combines the Horse (the 7th animal in the Chinese zodiac) with the Fire element. The Horse symbolizes energy\, freedom\, and determination\, while Fire adds passion\, boldness\, and strong leadership. In the zodiac order\, the Horse comes after the Snake and before the Goat (Sheep)—each year flowing into the next in a repeating cycle. \nTo celebrate\, we’ll be making bright\, fiery horses out of cardboard\, paint\, and paper—perfect for welcoming a year full of movement\, creativity\, and spark!  \nAll the zodiac animals are connected in one big circle\, and they also share five elements (Wood\, Fire\, Earth\, Metal\, Water) that move in a repeating pattern. Each year doesn’t stand alone — it grows out of the year before it and helps shape the year after it. \nLast year (2025\, the Wood Snake) was about thinking carefully\, learning\, and making smart plans — like planting seeds. This year (2026\, the Fire Horse) is full of energy and action\, so it’s a great year for trying new things\, being brave\, starting projects\, and moving forward with those plans. Next year (2027\, the Fire Goat) keeps some of that Fire energy\, but in a gentler way — it helps us turn our hard work into creativity\, teamwork\, and making beautiful things together. \nSo you can think of it like this: \nLast year we planned and planted.This year we run and grow.Next year we create and share. \nLet’s keep each other healthy\, please stay home if you feel unwell or have any potential Covid symptoms. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. Join us for a Community Garden Day with Art in the Parks Artist in Residence\, Lucia Fabio. Lend a hand with weeding and removing non-native plants while getting to know the plants now sprouting. Leave with seeds to plant. We hope to see you there! \nPlease wear comfortable clothes\, closed-toed shoes and sun protection\, and make sure to bring water. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. DESCRIPTION:Community Arts  \nCommunity Arts is held outside in Hermon Park most Saturdays. Join us in exploring the arts\, from puppets to painting. \nThe winds have been blowing the leaves off the trees. Come make leaf rubbings. A leaf rubbing is an easy art activity where you place a leaf under a piece of paper and rub over the paper with a crayon or pencil. The rubbing reveals the leaf’s veins and shape on the paper. It’s a fun way to see the patterns and details of leaves. \n\nMost Saturdays from 11 am–1pm  \nFree\, all ages  \nCommunity Arts is held outside in Hermon Park most Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Latin Percussion Lab with Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura \nThursdays (check site for updates) \n 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm   \nThis workshop happens in partnership with Neighborhood Music School  \nLatin Percussion Lab  \nSign up here! \nThis program is designed to introduce basic rhythms and counting exercises for students through the use of hand percussion and Afro-Latin drumming techniques. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. This will be a very fun and engaging drumming course. \nMatthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions\, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets\, like music\, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world\, whether it’s through live performance\, group teaching\, volunteer work\, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends. He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band\, Timba Tumbao. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13.
