DESCRIPTION:Latin Percussion Lab with Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura \nThursdays (check site for updates) \n 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm   \nThis workshop happens in partnership with Neighborhood Music School  \nLatin Percussion Lab  \nSign up here! \nThis program is designed to introduce basic rhythms and counting exercises for students through the use of hand percussion and Afro-Latin drumming techniques. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. This will be a very fun and engaging drumming course. \nMatthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions\, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets\, like music\, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world\, whether it’s through live performance\, group teaching\, volunteer work\, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends. He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band\, Timba Tumbao. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. SUMMARY:Opening for The Silence - Rachel Bridges
DESCRIPTION:The Silence \nMay 10–June 28\, 2025\,\nGallery Hours Saturdays 2pm – 5pm for duration of exhibition  \nA second generation Filipina American\, Bridges was largely unaware of her Chinese ancestry until recently\, though in retrospect there were clues\, such as the use of Chinese spices in her mother’s traditional Philippine meals. In The Silence\, Rachel Bridges uses family photos\, public archives\, and other source material to fill in the gaps of her own family history\, much of it erased through generations of conflict in the region. This exhibition explores both Bridges’ Filipino and new-found Chinese heritage through her primary medium of painting. \nThe Silence looks at changes in Philippine culture through women’s dresses\, a nod to new trade and a rise in Chinese immigration during periods of major Spanish and American colonization. Landscapes of the sea and boats represent some of the artist’s own family’s journey from South China to the Cagayan province of the Philippines. Bridges digs through archives in an attempt to understand the events that have shaped her family’s fractured history and to resurrect a forgotten past that\, while not spoken of\, is deeply felt. \n  \nArt in the Park at Hermon Park in the Arroyo Seco is a Public/Private Partnership Arts Facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)

He has performed as a soloist and with many ensembles over the last two decades. DESCRIPTION:Latin Percussion Lab with Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura \nThursdays (check site for updates) \n 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm   \nThis workshop happens in partnership with Neighborhood Music School  \nLatin Percussion Lab  \nSign up here! \nThis program is designed to introduce basic rhythms and counting exercises for students through the use of hand percussion and Afro-Latin drumming techniques. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. This will be a very fun and engaging drumming course. \nMatthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions\, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets\, like music\, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world\, whether it’s through live performance\, group teaching\, volunteer work\, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends. He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band\, Timba Tumbao. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. We will discuss/learn basic principles of music and skills for playing notes/chords on the guitar. We will share our experience and love/excitement for music and learn to bring that to life through the guitar. \n\n\n\nRafael is a multiinstrumentalist\, songwriter and performing artist born and raised in Los Angeles. He has performed as a soloist and with many ensembles over the last two decades. DESCRIPTION:Latin Percussion Lab with Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura \nThursdays (check site for updates) \n 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm   \nThis workshop happens in partnership with Neighborhood Music School  \nLatin Percussion Lab  \nSign up here! \nThis program is designed to introduce basic rhythms and counting exercises for students through the use of hand percussion and Afro-Latin drumming techniques. Students will have a chance to learn all about essential elements in Latin music like clave\, tumbao\, and basic conga tones. There will be an introduction to different types of instruments each week as well as a song of the week by various salsa and cha cha icons. This will be a very fun and engaging drumming course. \nMatthew Hernandez is a proud community arts advocate that has dedicated his work to the enrichment of cultural celebration and literacy through music. Understanding how music shapes and reflects cultural awareness and ambitions\, he recognizes the influence that music has over large groups of individuals that share a common ground in beliefs and expression. The main goal for Matthew is to bring those people together to share the same physical space and strengthen bonds through experiencing the ultimate form of expression that creative outlets\, like music\, allow. Being a source for bringing the community together brings him all the joy in the world\, whether it’s through live performance\, group teaching\, volunteer work\, or even just casual conversation with neighbors and friends. He currently studies at the Herb Alpert Music Center’s Applied Music Program at Los Angeles City College and has built a reputation for being the musical coordinator and saxophonist for salsa and latin jazz band\, Timba Tumbao. With his band\, he’s performed all across SoCal\, delivering a fun and high energy live latin dance show. He loves what he does because he gets the opportunity to connect with so many amazing communities and share an inclusive experience full of dancing\, smiles\, and fun memories. “Music is a language without words\, it speaks in only profound emotion and true expression.”  \nBorn and raised in El Sereno\, Los Angeles\, CA\, Sergio Segura has been a musician since theage of 13. Originally a pianist\, he found his passion lied in drums\, specifically Latin percussion drums. Following his musical passion\, Sergio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona and his Masters at Cal State LA with an emphasis in Afro Latin Music\, where he studied under legendary Cuban drummer -Calixto Oviedo- learning the fundamentals of Cuban music such as son\, danzon\, cha cha’s rumba and others. Since graduating\, Sergio has been performing with various bands and artists. As of recent he has performed with Colombian cumbia artist Yeison Landero at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford. He has also opened and shared the stage with the likes of Elvis Crespo\, La Sonora Dinamita\, Grupo Sonador among others at festivals such as Besame Mucho. Growing up first generation Mexican in a disadvantaged community\, Sergio understands the value of having spaces for children and adults to express their artistic side through music. Sergio believes in giving back to his community by sharing his knowledge. He currently continues to gig throughout the U.S. and enjoys teaching and improving his own skills. “Music is lifelong. There is never an end point and there’s always something new to learn.” “Drumming is the extension of our feelings. Join us for an eventful start to the first installment of the Latin Jazz Sessions at Art in the Park\, and surprise yourself with how much you could learn in just a few weeks! Sheet music and basic drumming pattern worksheets will be readily available every week. Everyone is free to join this program\, though some musical experience will greatly help in familiarizing patterns and learning songs. Musicians of all skill levels\, ages\, & backgrounds are invited to join the band in learning an eclectic mix of music\, including jazz\, latin\, folk\, & original material. Participation is FREE. Bring your instrument and water. SUMMARY:The Silence - Rachel Bridges (by appointment only)
DESCRIPTION:May 24 by appointment only \nThe Silence \nExhibition by Rachel Bridges\n\nMay 10th—June 28th\, 2025\n\n\nGallery Hours: Saturdays\, 2-5pm and by appointment \n\nA second generation Filipina American\, Bridges was largely unaware of her Chinese ancestry until recently\, though in retrospect there were clues\, such as the use of Chinese spices in her mother’s traditional Philippine meals. In The Silence\, Rachel Bridges uses family photos\, public archives\, and other source material to fill in the gaps of her own family history\, much of it erased through generations of conflict in the region. This exhibition explores both Bridges’ Filipino and new-found Chinese heritage through her primary medium of painting. \nThe Silence looks at changes in Philippine culture through women’s dresses\, a nod to new trade and a rise in Chinese immigration during periods of major Spanish and American colonization. Landscapes of the sea and boats represent some of the artist’s own family’s journey from South China to the Cagayan province of the Philippines. Bridges digs through archives in an attempt to understand the events that have shaped her family’s fractured history and to resurrect a forgotten past that\, while not spoken of\, is deeply felt. \nExhibition curated by our current artist in residence B&B  \nArt in the Park at Hermon Park in the Arroyo Seco is a Public/Private Partnership Arts Facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs \n For inquiries or to make an appointment\, please email hello@bedandbreakfast.life
